Barbados Crop Over Festival 2011

Crop Over is one of the largest festivals held in the Caribbean, it historically celebrates the end of the Barbados sugar cane crop harvest.

The Crop Over Festival officially runs from Saturday July 2nd for 4 weeks ending with the Grand Finale – Kadooment Day on Monday August 1st 2011. The Kadooment parade is filled with spectacular, multi colored costumed bands. Up to 15,000 participants fill the streets, dancing/jumping their way from Warrens to Spring Garden. Not to be missed!

Courtyard Marriott Hotel Opens in Barbados

The new Barbados Marriott Hotel opened at the end of January and marks the first Courtyard by Marriott hotel to open in Barbados. Located in Hastings across from the beach and popular south coast boardwalk, it is within easy access to Bridgetown, local attractions, restaurants and night life.

The 118 room hotel features The Centro restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, guest laundry and business center. The hotel also offers 2700 square feet of meeting space to accommodate small meetings and private functions.

Caribbean Twenty20 10th January to 23rd January 2011

The Caribbean T20 Cricket Tournament is to be held in Antigua & Barbados. The annual tournament has been expanded to ten teams with the inclusion of two top English T20 teams; Hampshire Royals and Somerset.

New Nonstop Service from Dallas Fort Worth to Barbados

American Airlines has a new nonstop service from DFW to Barbados. Commencing December 16th 2010, the service will run three times per week on Saturday, Monday and Thursday.

This will compliment American Airlines existing daily non stop services from New York (JFK) and Miami International Airport.

Caribbean Rum & Beer Festival, Barbados

The Caribbean Rum & Beer Festival to be held in Barbados on the 19th & 20th November 2010 is a celebration of the region’s wide array of locally produced rum and beer products. The venue for the festival will be the grounds of Portvale Sugar Factory, one of the very few remaining working sugar cane factories in the Eastern Caribbean.

During the 2 day festival in Barbados, Rum Distilleries and Breweries from throughout the Caribbean region will set up their stalls and provide patrons with the·opportunity to try over 100 diverse rum and beer beverages. They will also vie for the Gold, Silver & Bronze 2010 Caribbean Alcohol Beverage (CAB) Awards.

Rum is part of the heritage of the Caribbean, produced from the molasses from locally grown ‘King Sugar’ for over 300 years. Almost every island in the Caribbean has its own rum distillery, and this has been followed in more·recent times with a local·brewery.

Womens World Boxing Championships Barbados

Women World Boxing Championships – Barbados, Sept 6th to 19th 2010

The AIBA is to hold its sixth edition of the Women World Boxing Championships in Barbados. Boxers from around the world between the ages of 19 and 34 will compete.

The event will take place from September 6th to the 19th, and will be the first time the competition is being held since the IOC’s decision to include women’s boxing in the Olympic Games. The bouts will begin on September 9th at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium and the finals will be on September 18th.

Among the anticipated boxers to attend the AIBA Championships in Barbados are two-time world champion and 2008 AIBA Women’s Boxer of the Year Katie Taylor (IRL) along with four-time 46kg world champion Mary Kom (IND) and Canada’s Mary Spencer and Arianne Fortin, both two-time world champions.
